The Truth? I Never Really Niched Down — Until Now [2025 Replay]

It’s time for a replay—but not just any replay. This solo episode from 2023 dives into one of the most persistent questions in creative business: Should you niche down?

Never say never... because now in 2025 I’m back with an update. After years of expanding to serve all kinds of creatives, I’ve decided to re-niche back down… to photographers, and even expand to branding, senior, and wedding photographers. Yes, even though I’m not actively shooting anymore, I’m going all in on photographers. So let’s unpack what’s changed, what hasn’t, and how to think more strategically about niching in your own business.

Hey y'all.

2

:

Let's get into another replay today.

3

:

We're gonna go back to

from:

4

:

Should you niche down?

5

:

Before we hit play, I feel compelled

to tell you where I am at now.

6

:

I have officially removed the

contact page from my photography

7

:

website, but it doesn't mean that

I'm out of the photography world.

8

:

In fact, I am doubling down on serving

photographers inside of the systems part

9

:

of my business, and I'm going even deeper

by expanding the templates that I've made

10

:

to include branding photographers, wedding

photographers, and senior photographers.

11

:

So for the last two years, I've

been quietly expanding my course.

12

:

Well, maybe it wasn't so quiet,

but I changed it from the CRM

13

:

Blueprint for Photographers to

the CRM Blueprint for Creative.

14

:

But at my core, I have always been a

photographer, and I feel like that is one

15

:

of the parts of my marketing messaging

that was so strong, you know, systems

16

:

built by me for you in the same way

that I ran my own photography business.

17

:

So I am happy to announce that from

now on I am going to be talking

18

:

directly to photographers again.

19

:

There is going to be a shift in

photography episodes on this podcast,

20

:

as well as the messaging that I put

out throughout my marketing channels.

21

:

So today we're gonna go back to one of

those OG questions, should you niche down?

22

:

Spoiler alert, there's no one

right answer, but this episode

23

:

will help you make a smarter one.

24

:

Okay, let's listen to

the original episode.

25

:

Hello, hello and welcome back to the

Business First Creatives podcast.

26

:

You know, I don't shy away from

a controversial topic, but I

27

:

feel like I've been listening to

several podcasts and also seeing

28

:

conversations inside of Facebook groups

about the topic of nicheing down.

29

:

I've discussed the topic with a few

different guests on this podcast,

30

:

but I feel like it's a topic that

just keeps on coming back around.

31

:

And while everyone has their opinions

on whether or not you should niche down,

32

:

I just wanted to talk about it today.

33

:

Okay.

34

:

So I have primarily offered one

type of photography the entire

35

:

time that I've been a photographer,

and that is documentary sessions.

36

:

Whether that means a family in their

house or someone giving birth, or

37

:

you know, a humanitarian trip to

Mexico for a commercial client.

38

:

Like, the type of photography that

I do is incredibly niche like it's

39

:

documentary, but I do offer that

service in many different ways.

40

:

I will come to your house, I will

document, you know, a homecoming

41

:

when your kid is coming from a

mission or your spouse is coming

42

:

home from a military engagement.

43

:

Like, I will do anything as long as it

is real and I do not have to pose you.

44

:

So that's my previous

experience in like nicheing.

45

:

I don't take pictures of families outside.

46

:

I don't do babies in a basket, like I

don't do any of those kinds of things.

47

:

Now, when it comes to the systems

side of my business, I started doing

48

:

something that was incredibly niche.

49

:

I helped photographers do the backend

of their business, in Dubsado.

50

:

So that's one specific

client and one specific tool.

51

:

Now, in the idea of photographers,

I even really specialized

52

:

in family photographers.

53

:

Um, the first few setups, and I

would say, yeah, I would say the

54

:

first few setups over the first

few months, um, I was really only

55

:

marketing to family photographers.

56

:

And in fact, my course, the CRM

blueprint for Photographers is

57

:

technically for family photographers.

58

:

I say everywhere that I can, If

you are a family photographer,

59

:

this is the perfect fit for you.

60

:

Every email, every template, was

specifically created for you.

61

:

And then I get the messages that

are like, Hey, Colie, like, can

62

:

I really not join your course?

63

:

And I always tell them, no, absolutely

you can come into the course.

64

:

I just like to warn everyone,

that I designed the course for

65

:

family photographers because I

feel like we get left out of a

66

:

lot of different conversations.

67

:

Like there's a lot of tools

for wedding photographers.

68

:

I mean, everywhere.

69

:

There's email templates, there's

people giving courses, and I feel like

70

:

besides the creative aspect of family

photography, we don't have that many

71

:

educational resources like other genres.

72

:

So I did create my course to kind

of fill that need, but also I did it

73

:

because I'm a family photographer, guys.

74

:

Like that's what I know.

75

:

I sell the course as you know, this is

what I've done inside of my business.

76

:

So I'm basically giving you, you know,

access to all of the tools that I use

77

:

inside my own family photography business.

78

:

And I certainly would not feel comfortable

creating a course, specifically for

79

:

wedding photographers, when I have

never shot a wedding in my life.

80

:

Now I've done birth guys, I've dabbled in

branding and commercial photography, but

81

:

I have legitimately never shot a wedding.

82

:

And so, I mean, knock on wood, never say

never, but you guys are not gonna see

83

:

me putting courses out here and putting

offers out here for wedding photographers.

84

:

That just doesn't make sense.

85

:

I don't have the authority in that space.

86

:

To be able to talk about the

wins that I've gotten in my own

87

:

business to help you get those,

like it just doesn't make sense.

88

:

But what I will say is that when

I talk about systems offerings, I

89

:

specifically talked to photographers.

90

:

Now for a hot minute,

guys and for a hot minute.

91

:

I mean like seven months.

92

:

I really tried hard to talk to all

creative service entrepreneurs.

93

:

I mean, you may have heard that word

come out of my mouth a time or two.

94

:

I was really trying to expand who I was

offering my done for you services to.

95

:

I even played around with expanding

the course to offer different versions

96

:

for different people, but at the

end of the day, guys, I am lazy and

97

:

so I'm gonna do what I know, and

I just felt like, creative service

98

:

entrepreneurs are hiring me anyways.

99

:

Even if I am talking about

everything specific to photographers.

100

:

I mean, they're dropping in my dms,

they're sending me contact forms.

101

:

They're saying, Hey, Colie, like,

do you only work with photographers?

102

:

And then I tell them, no, I mean I, I'll

absolutely help you with your business.

103

:

But for me, doing all of my front face

marketing, my front face messaging

104

:

towards photographers helps me give

a very clear message of who I am

105

:

and what I offer and who I serve.

106

:

Can I do it for other people?

107

:

Absolutely.

108

:

Do I do it for other people?

109

:

I sure do.

110

:

But if you niche down, if you talk to one

kind of person, it makes your life easier,

111

:

even if you're willing to do other things.

112

:

So like on the subject of

birth photography, there are

113

:

no birth photos on my website.

114

:

I don't even think that there's a

mention of birth photography, unless

115

:

you land on my contact form and it

happens to be, or at least it was, one

116

:

of the options in the dropdown menu.

117

:

But like birth photography

is not something that I offer

118

:

to everybody off the street.

119

:

Like, you have to be one of my

clients for me to go to the hospital

120

:

with you or be in your birth space

and photograph that amazing moment.

121

:

You know, one of my previous clients or

related to one of my previous clients.

122

:

All right guys, so what

about you and your business?

123

:

Cuz I've talked a lot about me.

124

:

Have you niched down in your business?

125

:

Have you seen any specific gains,

from either nicheing down in

126

:

the offers that you have or the

specific clients that you go after?

127

:

I would love to know.

128

:

So hit me up in the DMs on Instagram

if you wanna talk about it.

129

:

Man, two years later, niching down

didn't just make my marketing easier.

130

:

It made my systems smarter.

131

:

But what's different in 2025, I've

learned that you can expand without

132

:

losing your niche, especially when

you're backend is dialed in, which is

133

:

why coming in July of 2025, there are

going to be expanded toolkits inside

134

:

of the CRM blueprint for creatives that

cover wedding photographers, branding

135

:

photographers, and senior photographers.

136

:

So yes, there are still the original

templates well updated for family

137

:

photographers as well as a more

general set for creatives like website

138

:

designers, copywriters, et cetera.

139

:

But everyone deserves systems that

work just as hard as you do, and

140

:

so I am expanding the course to

really talk to more photographers,

141

:

while keeping the focus on photography.

142

:

So if you're a photographer who's ready to

stop duct taping your experience together,

143

:

my course is officially open to you.

144

:

All the emails, all the automations, all

the tools that helped me build my very

145

:

own photography business and help hundreds

of other photographers do the same,

146

:

even if I am no longer shooting clients.

147

:

So check the show notes to peek inside

the course or DM me @coliejames , if

148

:

you're wondering if it's a fit.

149

:

Alright, that's it for this

episode, y'all see you next time.
